Ottomania
Istanbul with its multilayered and successive religious and ideological traces is an example of the practice of spolia; the re-use of symbols, materials and buildings of former empires (as triumphant or revivalist). Famous spoliations are found in Hagia Sofia and the Cisterna Basilica, or in the planned re-building of Emek Cinema within a new shopping center.
This issue of fabrikzeitung focuses on how turkish national identity is being reshaped, simultaneously by a desire for an ottoman cultural revival and for free-consumerism. The rise of Turkey's economic power raises the question if neoliberal policies and reactionary traditional ottoman values are set to collide or enhance one another?
